This movie is based on the true story of the enduring but troubled love between Lois Wilson (Ryder), co-founder of Al-Anon, and her alcoholic husband Bill Wilson (Pepper), co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. 

In 1914, Lois Burnham, a college-educated woman from an affluent family, met and fell in love with Bill Wilson, a young man of modest means. They married in 1918, and after his return from World War I, the two set out to build a life together. While Lois worked as a nurse, Bill struggled to find his niche. Lois believed that Bill was destined for greatness, and despite his increasing reliance on alcohol, she showered him with love and support. Eventually, Lois persuaded a friend’s husband to hire Bill at his financial firm. By 1927, Bill was working on Wall Street and the couple was living a luxurious lifestyle. But despite Lois’s valiant efforts to control his drinking, Bill’s addiction to alcohol spiraled out-of-control. Soon his job, their lifestyle and their dreams were all gone.

Screenplay co-written and directed by Franco Zeffirelli (Romeo And Juliet; Jesus of Nazareth) not long after he became a born-again Christian. Brother Sun, Sister Moon is an uncommonly rewarding and meaningful film experience. A real blessing, causing the viewer to examine the depth and commitment of his own walk with Christ. Zefirelli's cinematography is brilliantly beautiful throughout. The film focuses on the early years of Francis of Assisi, who renounced his family's riches and past worldly life to follow Christ in sincerity and humility, unencumbered by material possessions.

JOAN OF ARC: CHILD OF WAR, SOLDIER OF GOD is a wonderful documentary. Based in part on Joan’s actual testimony, the story starts in 1423 where Joan is a young French girl who starts to hear from God. He calls her to liberate France. At 17, she leaves home in the midst of another attack on her village by the English and Burgundians and convinces the heir to the throne to turn over the army to her. Miraculously, she leads the army to an incredible series of victories. When she decides to march on Paris, Charles pulls his support from her, and Joan is captured and eventually burned at the stake for heresy by the English.

The documentary helps viewers understand the history of Poland and the biography of Pope John Paul II. When Pope John Paul II came to Poland, millions showed up to see him. Even though the state television did everything to try to diminish his visit. By being so biased, the state media was irrevocably embarrassed. The people had gone to see the pope, and they saw that the television lied. Suddenly, the people realized there were more of them than there were of the Communists. And, when the Pope asked God to pour out His Holy Spirit, God transformed the people.

Babette's Feast

A memorable church hymn and Psalm asks the Lord to “make me an instrument of your peace.” A stunning illustration of this psalm is “Babette's Feast”, a wonderful Danish film that is ultimately about overcoming anti-religious prejudice with simple acts of kindness. An Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language film in 1987, it is without a doubt one of the finest foreign films ever made.


As directed by Gabriel Axel in the style of Bergman and Dreyer, it feels like a somber, more serious episode of “Touched By An Angel”. Here, the “angel” is Babette (Stephane Audran), a cook from Paris who arrives in a small Danish village to work for Martina (Brigitte Federspiel) and Philippa (Bodil Kjer), two twin daughters of a preacher. Babette was actually sent by an opera singer from Philippa’s past—the first half-hour is a well-crafted piece of storytelling, told in flashback, that sets up the plot clearly and coherently.

JOYEAUX NOEL, or MERRY CHRISTMAS, is an international production about the Christmas armistice between the Allies and the Germans in World War I in 1914. It tells what happens when a group of French, Scottish and German soldiers decide on their own to call a truce on Christmas Eve to celebrate the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and share some Christian brotherhood. Even a German Jewish officer is moved by the Catholic mass and singing that occurs during the Christmas celebrations. The war, however, eventually intrudes on the celebration.
